This chapter lists two basic guidelines that must be followed for custom manufacturing to work properly and provide good results.
1. Always create custom items in a quote
Always use the One-Off Item Generator for custom item creation within a quote instead of a sales order. Sales order lines are subject to MRP generation, whereas quote lines are not. During the quote stage you can customize the one-off BOM, establish the one-off item’s Job Days allocation, and establish the selling price. When the quote is converted to a sales order, the line Required date is updated and a CTO job will be generated in the next MRP run.
2. Modify job details in real time when changes are made
Custom manufacturing job details are commonly changed out on the shop floor when actual requirements differ from planned requirements. Whenever a process or component is added, changed, or deleted, modify the job details immediately in real time and never after-the-fact. Real-time, accurate job details are an essential requirement for numerous processes, including job release material allocation, work center scheduling, job issues, job costing, and PO generation.
