Remote Access
Our recommended method of remote access is Microsoft Remote Desktop.
The remote user connects to the server or wired DBA Client workstation and runs DBA there. This keeps the actual DBA connection to the database within the local network instead of extending the DBA client connection across the internet, wireless network, or VPN.
Remote Desktop Options
There are two supported Remote Desktop configurations.
1. Remote Desktop Services (RDS)
Microsoft Remote Desktop Services allows users to connect directly to the Windows server desktop and run DBA on the server.
▪RDS typically requires additional Microsoft licensing. Contact your Microsoft provider or IT administrator for licensing requirements.
▪Server setup: Provide users with access to the Windows desktop and launch DBA within that desktop session. Do not publish DBA as a standalone RemoteApp.
2. Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) to a Wired DBA Client Workstation
A user can also remotely access the desktop of a Windows workstation that is physically connected to the DBA network.
This can be an economical option for:
▪Remote users
▪Wireless users
▪Shop-floor devices
▪Laptops
▪Tablets
For example, a wired workstation can remain connected to the local network while a user accesses that workstation remotely from another device.
Wireless Access - Do Not Run DBA Directly Over a Wireless Network
DBA client workstations should not connect directly to the DBA server over a wireless network
DBA requires a continuous network connection to the server. Wireless connections are more susceptible to brief connectivity interruptions, which will cause DBA errors or disconnect an active session.
If a user needs to work from a wireless device, use Microsoft Remote Desktop to connect to either:
▪The DBA server through Remote Desktop Services, or
▪A workstation that is connected to the DBA server through the wired local network.
The wireless connection is then carrying the Remote Desktop session rather than DBA's direct database connection.
Do Not Run the DBA Client Directly Across a VPN
Do not run a DBA client directly across a VPN connection to the DBA server.
A VPN extends the network connection over the internet, introducing latency and the possibility of interruptions that can affect DBA performance and database connectivity.
Instead, use Remote Desktop or Remote Desktop Services to connect to a computer located on the same network as the DBA database server, and run DBA from that computer.
Tablets, Laptops, and Mobile Devices
Tablets, laptops, and other mobile devices can be used to remotely access DBA through Microsoft Remote Desktop App. You can then access either the DBA server desktop or a wired DBA workstation desktop from any device (Android or IOS).
